ESMF conducted a special session on the science that is emerging from the use of ESMF at the 2008 Fall AGU Meeting in San Francisco, CA. December, 2008.
The Earth System Curator, a sister project to ESMF, provided computational infrastructure support for the NCAR Advanced Study Program Colloquium entitled Numerical Techniques for Global Atmospheric Models. The colloquium focused on the intercomparison of nine atmospheric dynamical cores - the critical part of the model that solves the equations of fluid motion. The Curator team developed a web portal in collaboration with the Earth System Grid project that helped colloquium participants track and understand the characteristics of the different dynamical cores. Read more... June, 2008.
Sun Microsystems staff assisted ESMF with a port to the Solaris platform. The port is available in public release v3.1.0r. May, 2008.
ESMF received funding to begin comprehensive regression testing on the TeraGrid, a collection of high performance computers connected by an ultra-fast network. This will give ESMF access to additional computing platforms and will exercise the TeraGrid Build & Test Service to simplify the regression testing process. March, 2008.

The ESMF team kicked off an Interoperability and Integration Initiative (ESMF-I3) at the Community Meeting. The goal is to help modelers that have assortments of ESMF components define integrated systems, and to promote greater community-wide interoperability. Issues of immediate interest are the role of metadata in ESMF development and definition of compliance. May, 2007.
ESMF has been promoted from a group to a section (ESMI) at NCAR. The section also includes the Earth System Curator, a sister effort to provide model metadata to the geosciences community, May 2007.
ESMF software is now available for download on the Community Data Portal (CDP) (Click on the ESMF folder). The CDP is a distribution hub for datasets, models, and software toolkits. You'll need to register, but then you'll be able to use your password without registering for subsequent releases, May, 2007
